JOS— THE Bwatiye Community of Adamawa State, Plateau State chapter, has joined the call for the immediate reinstatement of the deposed paramount ruler of Bachama Kingdom, Mr. Freddy Soditi Bongo and the release of Bwatiye sons currently in detention over the June 8 ethno-religious crisis in Numan.
The community in a statement Wednesday, said only these could erase the notion that the steps so far taken by the government were aimed at ridiculing and destroying the revered traditional stool and institution of the Bachama and the values they represented in the social and political lives of the people. The statement signed by Mr. Godfrey Hunatufe and four others, described the deposition and banishment of the traditional ruler as “despicable, reprehensible, provocative and condemnable” and lambasted those it called treacherous Bwatiye sons for their conniving role in the saga.It stated that the community had observed a studied silence since the deposition because it thought Governor Haruna would listen to wise counsel and pleas both from within and without the Bachama Kingdom to rescind his decision.
It said it was in the best interest of peace and progress of the state for the governor to retrace “the wrong and unpopular steps taken by him” especially given the belief in some quarters that he was merely acting a script drafted by some influential forces.
The community said it was making the appeal because the pronouncements and actions of the governor had portrayed him as someone whose mind was already made up and was reluctant to redress the injustice done to the people. It commended the Bwatiye youth for remaining calm and not taking the laws into their hands in the face of provocation, as well as “patriotic Bwatiye sons” who had been taking steps to see that their traditional institution was not ridiculed “or bastardized by a stooge.” It would be recalled that the Hama Bachama was deposed and banished on June 11, by Governor Boni Haruna of Adamawa State following the June 8 violence in Numan.
