Bayelsa Wants FERMA to Take over State Roads From John Iwori in Yenagoa Bayelsa State government has called on Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to take over the maintenance of the Tombia road and the road leading to the state-owned Kolo Creek Gas Turbine Station, Imiringi in Ogbia Local Government area. The state government contended that the take over of these roads was the only way the agency can justify the release of funds for roads maintenance in the state. The state Deputy Governor, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, who made the call when a delegation from FERMA Monitoring and Evaluation Committee, Abuja paid him a courtesy call at Government House, Yenagoa, noted that the call became necessary in view of the near absence of Federal Government on Federal roads. While describing the topography of the state as unique, Jonathan emphasised that it is as a result of inability of Federal Government to carry out roads maintenance on the Mbiama/Yenagoa road that the state government took over the challenge of its maintenance. He added that FERMA should collaborate with the state Ministry of Works and Infrastructure with a view to coming up with an acceptable formula for it to make visible impact in the state. Earlier in his speech, the leader of the delegation and chairman, Ministerial Monitoring and Evaluation Committee on operation 500 Roads, Mr. Oyesina Afolabi, told the deputy governor that they were in the state to carry out vigorous assessment on the state of roads maintenance by FERMA in Bayelsa State. Afolabi used the opportunity to call on the state government to inaugurate the state roads maintenance agency through the state House of Assembly with a view to complementing activities of FERMA on roads maintenance across the country.
