'Multiple Entry Points to Foreign Airlines Bad for Nigeria'
By Ndubuisi Francis

Stakeholders in the aviation industry have warned against increased granting of multiple entry points to foreign airlines, saying such generosity of opening the nation's airspace remained a serious disincentive.

Speaking against the backdrop of the granting of more frequencies and entry points mostly to European carriers in the past few years, stakeholders, who converged at a seminar in Lagos, unanimously said government was opening its airspace carelessly at the detriment of its own national interest.

The tone for discussion was set by the Executive Director of Bellview Airlines, Mr. Gbenga Olowo, who in his paper captioned "Aviation in Democracy: Reflection on Nigerian Airlines," noted that multiple entry points to foreign airlines through the nation's gateways, including Lagos, Port Harcourt, Kano and Abuja was a major policy contradicting government's resolve to develop Lagos as the hub of the African air transport system.

He added that allowing foreign airlines unfettered entry into the country would not only sound the death knell for the domestic carriers but continue to engender enormous capital flight through huge home remittance by the foreign carriers which in turn puts pressure on the exchange rate of the naira.

Besides, Olowo said the gulf in the balance of trade against Nigeria widens even as he observed that foreign airlines would continue to mount pressure on government for increased frequency thereby increasing market share.

Olowo stated that government has designated six Nigerian airlines on the international routes and also expressed its intention to reserve London, New York, Johannesburg, Dubai and Jeddah routes.
