Chukwumerije Canvasses Fiscal Autonomy for Legislature From Kola Ologbondiyan in Abuja Chairman of the Senate Committee on Inter-parliamentary Affairs, Senator Uche Chukwu-merije, yesterday canvassed for fiscal and monetary independence for the legislative arm of government, noting that it would guarantee a functional legislative process. Chukwumerije, who stated this during an interaction with newsmen to review the performance of the committee's first legislative year, argued that "only the courage of insistence on legislative rights" would guarantee the freedom of the legislature. According to him, the committee in the last one year, introduced criteria for the selection of delegates to inter-parliamentary conferences "in order to secure stability of attendance and enhance the quality of our inputs," adding that the committee participated in no fewer than eleven international conferences during the legislative year under review. "Each conference offered the senate an opportunity to make valuable contributions, generally appreciated by other participants, to discussions and debates on the problems and prospects of extending the frontiers of parliamentary democracy in the world and solving conflicts," he further said. Disclosing that the committee is committed to networking Nigeria's legislature and establishing a national forum for acquiring legislative skills, reinforcing our parliamentary structure and deepening our democratic culture, he said "arrangements for the convention of a national conference of all our legislatures and a national workshop have reached advanced stage but the arrangements were unfortunately delayed by lack of funds."
