Labour Reforms: NULGE Calls for National Prayer From Juliana Taiwo in Abuja Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has called on Nigerians to embark on a national prayer at every local council against what it described as the President Olusegun Obasanjo's plot to weaken democracy. General Secretary of NULGE, Alhaji Abubakar Salam, told newsmen yesterday that the call is aimed at stopping Obasanjo from "killing democracy" by stifling opposition through the Trade Union Act amendment bill, which he has sent to the National Assembly. Salam stressed the need for Nigerians to pray against the Pension Act, which he described as a monster that would deny workers of their gratuity at the expiration of service. He observed that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has been mandated by its Central Working Committee (CWC) to take Federal Government to court over the Pension Act as controversies continue to trail the new contributory pension scheme. He said the decision to go to court was taken at the last one day workshop organised by NLC in conjunction with American Labour Solidarity Centre in Abuja for union leaders in the congress, Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Congress of Free Trade Union (CFTU) after the workers expressed dissatisfaction with some provisions in the new Act. "This Act is a monster such that no worker at the expiration of his service is entitled to gratuity. It is a policy document fraught with uncertainty and danger for the Nigerian workers," he warned.
