Corruption : Akanbi Indicts Judges for Delaying Cases
From Ahamefula Ogbu in Abuja
Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Prac-tices and Other Offences Commission (IC-PC), Justice Mustapha Akanbi, yesterday blamed State High Court Judges for the delay in concluding cases brought before them by the Commission.
Akanbi vowed to prosecute about six persons, who brought allegations against the Niger Delta Development Commission (ND-DC) but later withdrew it.
The Chairman who appeared before the House of Repre-sentatives Committee on Anti-Corruption, where he was tasked on alleged selective application of the law and delays in concluding cases, denied that it was the fault of his Commission, but said judges at state High Courts were always reluctant in handling corruption cases brought before them.
While making his presentation, Akanbi spoke of six men who brought grievous allegations against the NDDC, but regretted that before reports of the commission investigation on the allegations could be made known, the people wrote again to withdraw their complaints.
"They caused us to go through a lot of job and expended so much in investigations, only for them to come back with a letter withdrawing the complaint. We are going to make sure that we find out what made them withdraw the petition and if they did it to profit from it, we shall prosecute them", he said.
He lamented the paucity of funds in his Commission and wondered how he would be expected to perform well when he was starved of funds, pointing out that unless they were adequately funded, it would impact negatively on their output.
He lamented that the spirit of those he called "crack team investigators" was being dampened, because their allowances were not being paid, adding, "if your wife requests for N2,000 for soup and you give her N500, then you will make do with a N500 soup".
According to him, there had been complaints in the past about the Commission's inability to prosecute influential members of the society, but quickly pointed out that when the Commission did, the courts frustrated the efforts in the course of prosecution.
