Work Begins on New Rivers Govt House From Donald Andoor in Port Harcourt Work on the multi-million naira ultra modern building complex, to replace the "Brick House", which presently houses the Rivers State Governor's office and official quarters, has commenced with the demolition of some structures. Although, the exact cost of the project could not be ascertained as at the time of this report, the new government house complex, being handled by Julius Berger, runs into millions of naira. The company moved to site about four weeks ago, and has commenced work in earnest. Already, it has pulled down some smaller structures which hitherto were being used as offices and living quarters, and in replacement, some massive foundation for new houses are springing up. Also, the main entrance into the government house from the eastern side has been blocked by containers, while another ent-rance has been provided from the western end. Governor Peter Odili, in company of his Deputy, Sir Gabriel Toby, went round to inspect the construction work. Odili told newsmen shortly after the inspection that his one week trip outside the country was to inspect the materials and furniture which were being produced for the new government house.
