LGs Contribute N69m to Benue Varsity From Daniel Ior in Makurdi In fulfilment of their promise to contribute towards the improvement of infrastructural problems facing Benue State University, the 23 local government areas of the state have contributed N69 million to the university for the development of its infrastructure. The money is to be paid in six months at the rate of N500,000 monthly, from each of the local government areas of the state. Vice Chancellor of the University Prof. David Ker, revealed this at a Management Dinner held in honour of the 23 donor local government chairmen in the state. Ker said the money would be used to build "three large lecture theatres of 1,000 students each," adding that the money would be used to construct "ten offices for academic staff in each building." He described the intervention of the council chairmen as timely, explaining that the university started a modest student intake of 304 when it took off in 1992, he however added that twelve years after, the university has a student population of about 20,000, utilising a grossly deficient infrastructure. Said he: "In the initial take off of 304 students, Benue State University now has an undergraduates population of 10,436 students. Post-Graduate school ,has enrolled 3,000 students. When we introduce the ,sub-degree students population, we are talking about ,an academic community close to 20,000 students." National President, Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Hon Baver Dzeremo, said decision of the local governments to render the financial assistance was informed by the prudent and efficient management abilities demonstrated by the vice chancellor. These virtues, he noted, encouraged them in making the contributions without doubts of effective and judicious use.
