Polio: Another Problem Looms in Kano
From Yakubu Musa in Kano
Barely three days after Kano State government kicked off oral polio vaccination programme, a serious set back is already threatening the immunisation project in the state as the ad hoc staff lacked requisite knowledge of administering the vacinne.
THISDAY checks, revealed that most of the ad hoc staff recruited to handle the programme have formed the habit of pouring away the content of the vaccines instead of immunising the children.
A resident of the city, Auwalu Pele told THISDAY that "I witnessed it, the girls were just wasting the drugs."
According to Pele, the girls were in the habit of resting at ward head houses after roaming the streets of their assigned areas.
"From what I saw the people recruited are not well-trained. In fact, they don't even know their job, they hardly enter any house so how can they convince anybody or may be they don't believe in it," added Pele.
Another resident, Musa, however, told THISDAY that he even begged some girls at Yan Awaki quarters to "come and immunise his children but they said they would come back but I am still waiting for them."
Kano State Governor, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, started the campaign at Takai Local Government area last week, with a call on the people of the state to embrace the programme as the safety of the vaccine has been certified.
