Plateau: 'Alli's Actions Similar to Dariye' From Funmi Peter-Omale in Jos Human rights group in Plateau State have said the activities, actions and strategies of the sole administrator, Major-General Chris Alli (rtd), were not different from those employed by the suspended governor, Chief Joshua Dariye in handling crises in the state. They described recent attempt by the state government to cover up happenings in Yelwa Shendam as "governance by deceit." Mr. Joseph Sangosanya of Christian Foundation for Social Justice and Equity and Mr. Steve Aluko-Daniel of Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), in a joint statement, noted that various dialogues and consultations initiated by government in the last two months were dictated and galvanised to promote the selfish interest of some people at the detriment of the majority. "The peace programme of Alli from May - November 2004 is also a recap of Dariye's elitist approach to the issues that were at stake which in effect has landed us in a negative peace which never took us too far from the 2001 violent conflict." On the restructuring of government ministries and parastatals as well as sack and appointment of new heads of boards, the rights groups observed that government should have geared efforts at enhancing their capacities for efficiency and effectiveness. "The office of the administrator did not adequately probe into the past activities of some of the individuals as some of them recently indicted have not been cleared," they said. Sangosanya and Aluko-Daniel affirmed that the situation in the state required the restoration of all democratic structures on or before the expiration of six months, warning that attempt to extend would not augur well.
