Nnamani Tasks Young Doctors on Professionalism Enugu From Emmanuel Ugwu in Enugu Governor of Enugu State, Dr Chimaroke Nnamani, has charged young medical doctors in the country to always stick to professional standards if indeed they intend to practice medicine. Nnamani gave the charge while addressing 97 medical graduates of the College of Medicine, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), who took Physicians Oath on Monday. Dr Nnamani, who is an alumnus of the institution, urged the new doctors to set targets for themselves and choose whether to practice medicine with professional ethics or become traders at the detriment of their profession. He explained that early decision was necessary for the new doctors, as they would not be able to serve two masters and still attain excellence in medical practice. He advised them to imbibe the virtue of humility, and be ever ready to learn from their older colleagues to meet patients' demands. His words: "The most important thing in life is that you must change society. When you leave an environment, endeavour to leave it better than you met it. The key to successful practice of medicine is basic science and when you understand the science book, no one can push you around." In his speech, Vice-chancellor of UNN, Professor Chinedu Nebo, represented by the Deputy Vice-chancellor, Professor Bede Ibe, also urged the young doctors to hold on to the ethics of medical profession, to avoid the risk of sanction. Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Professor Chukwuma Ozumba, described the 2002 medical class as some of the most brilliant doctors ever produced by the institution since inception of the College of Medicine 34 years ago, and expressed confidence in their ability to perform anywhere in the world.
