Committes raised in C/River
From Tunde Sanni in Ilorin and Amby Uneze in Calabar
With the 2007 presidential elections gathering momentum, the Co-ordinator of 'Project 007', Major General Abdul-karim Adisa (rtd) has said General Ibrahim Babangida's quest to lead the nation in 2007, through the ballot box is neither a desperate nor a do or die affair.
Also, the 'Project 2007' group in furtherance to its objectives has inaugurated committees in Cross River State with the aim of sensitizing people of the state to reconsider Babangida as Nigeria's President in 2007.
Addressing Badari ward stalwarts as well as officials of the group in Kwara State, Adisa contended, "we are inviting him to come and lead us but it is not a do or die affair".
He maintained that Babangida was not desperate to lead the country and urged his supporters to exercise restrain in the face of provocation.
He denied receiving financial gratifications from Babangida to campaign for his presidential ambition even as he admonished them to ignore insinuations that he (Adisa) is shortchanging some people.
"General Babangida is still alive and he is within reach of the sponsors of the rumour mongers. Let them go to him to crosscheck if he gave me many money for his campaign",he added.
He urged the supporters to be wary of acts capable of destabilizing the state, adding that "please don't fight with anybody so that we don't witnessed another turbulent era in the history of the state".
Adisa further advised them to shun violence in the face of provocation, stating that "lets leave everything to God and since the police have stepped in, let us allow them to handle the matter".
Chairman of the organisation in the state, Engr. Nte Basiekanem while, undertaking a tour of the Northern and Central senatorial district said the committees were inaugurated to sensitise the masses at the grassroots to lend their support to Babangida towards realising his presidential ambition.
The chairman, while inaugurating the committees, said Babangida so far ranks high and shoulder above other perceived candidates, adding that during his eight year reign, he (Babangida) positively touched the lives of virtually every Nigerians as evident in some of the economic blueprints such as the Directorate for Roads and Rural Infrastructure (DFRRI) and electricity projects across the country.
Basukanem called on the committee members to work hard and mobilise the people at the grassroots to see reason why the masses should support the former President's candidature for 2007.
He said the "serious business of the projects is to see the General through the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries and general election".
The project is headed in the Central senatorial district by a serving member of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon. Mark Obi, representing Ikom state constituency, while Hon. John Ulafor heads the committee in the Northern district.
