Anambra PDP Faults Ngige Over Liberation Day
From Charles Onyekamuo in Awka

Anambra State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described as a "misnomer" the July 10 celebration tagged "Anambra Liberation Day", by Governor Chris Ngige over the botched abduction move, which aimed at removing him from office.

While commemorating the day at the Alex Ekwueme Park in Awka, Ngige had said his abduction was a blessing in disguise and that God used it to liberate the state from the shackles of slavery and the stranglehold of economic moguls who had milked the state dry and pillage its economy.

The liberation day celebration, was however, observed in spite of a directive from the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP, that the celebration may likely truncate the peace process it has already initiated into the Anambra political crisis.

But the party's acting Chairman in the state, Chief Ifeatu Ivy Obi-Okoye told our correspondent in Awka, that the governor's resolve to go ahead to "commemorate his differences" with Chief Uba and other associates in spite of the NWC directive to shelve it was not only "unfortunate," but a "misnomer."

He said the celebration was unnecessary because the state was not under any bondage, adding that the government's disregard for the NWC directive accounted for the reason top party functionaries in the state and national headquarters of the PDP shunned the ceremony.

He said it was the considered view of the party that solutions to the Anambra crises must be found, and "decided not to promote positions that will exacerbate the already tense situation."

"I have been asking that question really. Is Anambra State under bondage. Does it need liberation in the first instance Certain things make me ponder. The governor is a product of this party. He was packaged by this party. If the state was under bondage, the party that packaged him would be in a position to know.

"The celebration of the so called liberation day was a misnomer. The state was not under bondage to warrant the celebration. We have more serious things, problems to tackle. The state of infrastructure here is still very poor and democracy dividends have to be provided for the people. This poor state of things accounted largely for the reason the party didn't give Mbadinuju (immediate past governor of Anambra State) a second chance because he performed below expectation," he said, even as he declined from scoring Ngige's performance in the past one year, describing it as "a year of all kinds of funny things," he said.
