'Why House Forum Was Formed'
From Tunde Sanni in Ilorin
A member of the House of Representatives, Hon Depo Oyedokun has said the Forum for Democracy and Good Governance in Nigerian (FDGGN) was not formed to create crisis of leadership in the House. Rather, it was established based on the need to evolve good governance in the country.
The lawmaker representing Oluyole federal constituency in Oyo State lamented the bad name attributed to the forum by some people, who do not understand the modus operandi of the forum.
According to him, the FDGGN was a caucus set up by some members of the House but embraced by others as a means of contributing and in ensuring that the masses reap the democratic dividends.
"One feels disappointed that some people concluded that the forum was established to upstage the leadership of the house led by Alhaji Aminu Bello Maisari, who we all have a great respect for his leadership acumen and charism", he said.
The lawmaker said it was true that the FDGGN was facilitated among others by Hon. Usman Bugaje, who contested the leadership of the House with the incumbent, but however said, the formation of the forum essentially was to market transparency in governance, while ensuring that democracy attains the highest standard of decorum which was expected to accelerate rapid development for the country.
He added that the activities of the forum has always be conducted in the open, adding that "our activities has always been an open thing, nothing clandestine about it. Our goal is more noble than targeting the leadership of the House".
Oyedokun said the forum has not been in limbo or forced into extinction as being speculated.
On the contentious Labour Bill, the lawmaker noted that the bill was yet to be presented for debate on the floor of any of the chambers of the National Assembly.
The lawmaker assured that the lower chamber will stall the passage of the bill if it is discovered to be anti-labour.
"We will do everything within the legal framework from labour to persuasion to kill that bill if it will not be in the best interest of labour", he stressed.
