Defending Champion Ousted NICON Football By Femi Solaja At the Ahmadu Bello University centre of the 2nd round of the on-going NICON NUFOL championship, Bayero University, the University of Maiduguri has ousted Kano, the defending champion of the NICON NUFOL Championship Cup. The UNIMAID team thrashed Benue State University (BSU) 6-1 in the evening agreed to play their second match earlier than planned in order to go back to their exams, which they left for the NICON NUFOL championships. The match, which was the most tension filled of all the matches played at the ABU centre ended in a draw. Defending champs BUK needed a win while UNIMAID needed just a draw, which they got after frustrating the BUK boys' efforts. Earlier in the day, the match btw Ambrose Alli Uni Ekpoma (AAU) and Imo State University (IMSU) ended 3-4, which the AAU coach described as a 'let down and bitter pill.' UNIJOS emerged qualifier in the group due to their superior goal advantage since AAU lost to IMSU from ABU Zaria. The NICON NUFOL championship train moves to University of Benin (UNIBEN) for stage two of the second round. Two varsities are expected to qualify at the UNIBEN centre to join UNIJOS and UNIMAID for the semi-finals schedule to hold in Lagos.
