Paramedics Strike Over Bonuses Ambulance drivers and paramedics began a series of strikes yesterday to demand an Olympic bonus similar to the one police and other security personnel were promised. The paramedics union rejected the government's offer of a $48 monthly raise instead of the bonus. The police and other security forces were promised bonuses of up to $3,000. Health Minister Nikitas Kaklamanis appealed to the union to consider its responsibilities during the Aug. 13-29 games and insisted the government's offer was fair because it was a permanent increase, not just a bonus. At $48 extra a month, paramedics would have to work about five years and two months to reach $3,000. The union says that 2,600 ambulance drivers and paramedics have been specially trained for Olympic duties. The government has rejected their demands, citing skyrocketing Olympic costs.
