1st of 4 Fukuoka Women Jailed Over Murders for Insurance A 44-year-old woman was sentenced to life imprisonment Monday at the Fukuoka District Court for her role in the killing of two men for insurance money in 1998 and 1999 in Fukuoka Prefecture. Three other women-two of who were married to the victims-have also been convicted in the case. Miyuki Tsutsumi, a former clinical test coordinator, was the first of the four women to be sentenced. Prosecutors had demanded the death sentence for Tsutsumi. Junko Yoshida, 45, Kazuko Ikegami, 43, Hitomi Ishii, 45, and Tsutsumi, all from Kurume in the prefecture, were charged with killing Ishii's husband and defrauding insurance companies. All the defendants except Tsutsumi pled guilty. The prosecutors have also demanded death sentences for Yoshida and Ikegami, and life imprisonment for Ishii. In passing sentence, presiding Judge Toshiyuki Tani said he regarded Yoshida, a former nurse, as the ringleader in the two murders. He also said Yoshida had manipulated Tsutsumi and he had taken that into consideration in his sentencing. According to the ruling, Tsutsumi, Yoshida and Ikegami killed Ikegami's husband, Eiji Hirata, 39, by injecting air into a vein in January 1998, and defrauded an insurance company of about 35 million yen. In March 1999, all four women killed Ishii's husband, Tsuyoshi Kumon, 44, by pouring a copious amount of whiskey into his body via a tube in his nose, and received about 33 million yen in insurance money. All four women, who were classmates at a nursing school in the city, were arrested in connection with Kumon's death in April 2002.
