Police sack four officers for failing test
From Isah Ibrahim, Gusau
ZAMFARA State Police Commissioner Alhaji Ibrahim P. Machi, has dismissed four police officers for their failure to tell him how many months are in one Calendar year.
The dismissal was ordered as the police embarked on the verification of the credentials of officers.
The police commissioner disclosed yesterday while answering questions from reporters in his office that the dismissed policemen also failed to write their own names in the course of the dictation phase of the exercise.
According to him, the exercise is for only those policemen that were recruited during the current democratic government.
He added that the exercise was informed by a complaint by the public that the Police was recruiting criminals and armed robbers into the force.
"I have known about four or five whom I dismissed based on the questions I put before them and they could not answer," Machi stated.
He added: "Somebody working with me, I asked him; what is my name
He could not tell me my name. You can imagine. There and then, I asked him, how many months are in a calendar year. He could not tell me. He told me nine months and this is a policeman. How would I accept that in the force"
He explained that the police would no longer continue to accommodate people who could not read and write in the force, pointing out that any police officer that could not perform well and defend his certificates must leave the force.
The commissioner further disclosed that as soon as the exercise was completed, his command would release the total number of the dismissed policemen. He stated that the command was waiting for the response of some institutions over the suspicious certificates presented by some police officers.
The Police Commissioner revealed that plans were underway by the command to send successful officers after the exercise for training and re-training.
