Zamfara plans N7m endowment fund for disabled
From Isah Ibrahim, Gusau
IN its bid to stem the increasing rate of begging in Zamfara, the state government's Zakkat and Endowment Board has set up various business equipment worth about N7 million for onward distribution to disabled people in the state.
Briefing journalists yesterday in Gusau, the state capital, the Executive Secretary of the board, Mallam Atiku Sani Maradun, stated that the new programme is aimed at eradicating various acts of begging and poverty in the state.
He added that the equipment which include grading machines, sewing machines and financial assistants to start small-scale businesses, would be distributed to the destitute, disabled and families of orphans free of charge with a view to sustaining their income.
Maradun revealed that apart from 136 equipment to be distributed, two million naira has been earmarked for distribution to 500 people.
The executive secretary explained that the board has identified 39 people as beneficiaries from the 13 local councils while about 70 people would benefit from the scheme in Gusau Council under the first phase of the programme.
He said this would be the first of its kind, which the state Governor Ahmad Sani is expected to launch on August 14, 2004.
Maradun maintained that the exercise would continue quarterly, describing it as a fierce crusade to fight indolence and redundancy among the people of the state.
He stated that the board has embarked on this project from the money it realised as Zakkat from business contractors and assistants by the state government monthly.
The executive secretary expressed that the board would take the responsibility of installing the equipment at the beneficiaries' residence.
