ABA — ABOUT 900 policemen have been dismissed from the force across the country for engaging in various corrupt activities, while another 70 found to be extorting money from motorists are currently being detained, the acting police commissioner for Abia State, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, has said. Addressing newsmen in Aba yesterday Abubakar explained that the offenders were apprehended by special monitoring teams set up by the inspector-general of police, Mr. Tafa Balogun, adding that the teams have been going round the various states of the federation to fish out those who have been giving the police bad image.
He said: “It is true that we have bad eggs in the police just as we have in other organisations. But we are ever ready to flush out those with bad records from the system and this crusade will be sustained.”
Giving details of police activities in Abia State in the last one month, Abubakar said that eight vehicles snatched by robbers were recovered, while eight robbery suspects were arrested and are being detained. Among those arrested were a gang of four robbers - Chiemda Mbama, Chinedu Igbeke, Emeka Ogboso and Chijioke Okorie- who allegedly robbed tow filling stations along Aba-Owerri road in Aba of a total sum of N177,000 and another three arrested in Umuahia who, he said, specialise in removing pump metres in filling stations.
Also arrested was one Fidelis Agomuo who was found with 840 assorted text books marked “Education Trust Fund (ETF)” ministry of education library, Umuahia, as he was selling the books in Aba. The police command displayed large quantities of Indian Hemp and cocaine recovered during their various operations. Abubakar however regretted that cases of possession of hard drugs referred to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have remained inconclusive because officials of NDLEA have not been sending a feed back to the police. “If the cases have been disposed of in courts, they should tell us so that we will amend our records,” he pleaded.
