Lack of funds stalls recruitment into federal civil service

AARON OSSAI, Abuja

LACK of funds has stalled recruitment into the Federal Civil Service in the past three years, the Commissions Director In-Charge of Recruitments, Alhaji Yakubu Tanko, said on Tuesday.

Briefing members of the House of Representatives Committee on Public Service Matters in Abuja, Tanko said the situation was so bad that the commission could not raise money to advertise for the vacancies in various ministries and parastatals.

He said every ministry was supposed to declare vacancies for recruitments and promotions every year explaining that no ministry had been able to do so for some time now because, according to him, there was no money to either advertise for such vacancies nor send commissioners to state capitals to conduct interviews.

Speaking further, Tanko said vacancies for this year in various ministries and parastatals were compiled since April, adding that the commission had not been able to raise money to advertise such vacancies in three national newspapers.

He told members of the committee that in an attempt to ensure that vacancies for this year was done and interviews conducted nationwide before December , the commission had approached the Head of Service, Ministries of Health and Education for financial assistance.

He therefore appealed to members of the committee to assist in ensuring that monies budgeted for the commission was released on time to assist them in carrying out their day to day activities.

Earlier, the chairman of the committee, Mr. Leo Awoyemi said the director was invited to brief the committee on allegations that the commission had been, among other things, illegally recruiting and promoting civil servants.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives had accepted to probe the alleged arrest and detention of staff of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) by the State Security Services (SSS).

In adopting a motion of urgent national importance moved by Dr. Haruna Yerima, the House unanimously agreed to begin a probe into the matter today, August 4.
