FCT Minister warns Abuja markets developers

IHUOMA CHIEDOZIE, Abuja

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Malam Nasir el-Rufai has asked developers selected to build markets in Abuja to withdraw if they are not ready to meet the deadline for completing the job.

El-Rufai gave the warning on Tuesday at the formal signing of agreement between the FCT authority and those selected to develop public markets in four districts of the territory, namely Kaura, Garki II, Mabushi and Wuye.

He charged the developers to build according to the approved blueprint from the ministry, adding that the rule would not be bent for anyone.

El-Rufai also commended the Abuja Investment and Property Development Company Limited (AIPDC) for conducting the bidding process that led to the selection of the developers.

According to the minister, the process was transparent and arrived at following the due process, which resulted in the selection of the best bidders.

AIPDCs Managing Director, Alhaji Tijanni Abdullahi, explained that the procedure for developing the markets was the build, operate and transfer (BOT) method.

The project was initiated by the Ministry of Federal Capital Territory (MFCT) in line with its plans to develop the four public markets in the designated parts of FCT as earmarked in the Abuja master-plan.

Forty-nine expressions of interest to develop the markets were tendered and last May 21, they were evaluated and preferred bidders selected for each of the four markets to be developed.

Metshade Limited will develop Mabushi market for N1.4 billion, while Urban Shelter Limited is to develop Garki II market at a cost of N3 billion.

The Kura district market is to be developed by Berwick Nigeria Limited for N2.11 billion, while All Purpose Shelter Development Company Limited will develop Wuye market for N1.15 billion.

The deadline for the completion of the markets range between one and two years, as indicated in the separate bids of the developers.

The developers are expected to complete about 30 per cent of the market before collecting money from prospective shop buyers.

A streamlined standard that provided for bank spaces, warehouses, cold rooms and size of stores is to be followed by all the developers.
