Reps summon BPE D-G over ALSCON sale AYODELE ADEGBUYI, Abuja Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Dr. Julius Bala has been summoned by the House of Representatives over the privatization of Aluminium Smelter Company of Nigeria (ALSCON). Bala was summoned following a petition sent to the House by BFI Group, ALSCON�s prefer-red bidder in the just-concluded privatization of the firm on grounds of alleged unwhole-some practices by BPE. Speaker of the House, Alhaji Bello-Masari, who issued the directive, explained that Bala should come and clear the allegation levelled against BPE by BFI Group. The leader of the Group Dr. Reuben Jaja had alleged in the petition that BPE used discriminating contract terms and conditions to frustrate its attempt to raise funds to complete the transaction. For instance, the BFI Group wondered why BPE demanded full payment for property within 90 days, but will not release complete ownership of the property until after 180 days. The group also said the reversal of its preferred bidder status also account for why it could not mobilise the required funds at the expiry date due to the fact that its American friends became sceptical. BFI also alleged discriminatory extension practices whereby some companies that have bidded before or on the same day with it were given extension where- as its own request was rejected. It also said its consortium was unfairly targeted by the national security apparatus while it failed to do same on Rusal and its chairman, Oleg Derispaslla as well as chairman of Dayson Holdings. |
