The Inspector General of
Police, Tafa Balogun,
yesterday distributed N67 million to 47 families of policemen who died in the performance of duties.
Presenting the cheques to the beneficiaries, IGP Balogun said that the money was from insurance scheme of the force to alleviate the problems of dead policemen’s families.
He said that the insurance money was the first line of succour before the payment of gratuities of the affected officers.
The IGP said the current police management would continue to improve on the welfare of both serving and dead policemen. “This money would enable their children to continue education because many of them abandoned school after the death of their benefactors.”
Earlier, the Managing Direc-tor of Benefit Assurance (the leadwriter), Mr. Akin Ogubiyi, said that it was a known fact that Nigerians do not appreciate the role of insurance companies.
He said that it was gratifying that the current inspector general recognised the importance of insurance and decided to make use of it to improve the welfare of policemen and urged other institutions to emulate the IGP.
Ogunbiyi said that although death is inevitable, “but the people left behind should not be allowed to suffer. Since incep-tion of the insurance scheme, a total of N222 million had been paid out.”
One of the recipients, Mr. Samuel Obor, thanked the IGP on behalf of all families. Families of policemen from the ranks of constable to inspector got N800,000 cheque while those on commissioner rank received N1 million.
Meanwhile, the force head-quarters announced the recovery of 12 stolen vehicles from different parts of the country.
