Nigeria Deploys Troops to Darfur By Collins Edomaruse with agency report Nigeria is to deploy 120 troops to the troubled Darfur region of Sudan to stave-off increasing ethnic cleansing going on in the area. Chairman of African Union and President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, made the disclosure yesterday on Cable News Network (CNN) programme, Inside Africa. Obasanjo also said that, apart from Nigeria, Rwanda and another unnamed African country would from the first of countries in the country to pull the 300 initially needed troops to Sudan. He blamed western countries for the security lapse in Sudan and said: "The West always treats African affairs with levity. If it had responded promptly when the deterioration was first noticed, the situation would not have gone out of hand. "But if it were an affair concerning the west, they would have intervened promptly," he added. He lauded the AU, but solicited for what he called continued assistance from "our development partners and friends outside Africa, to enable us carry out our programmes. "This is because, the continent's major problem is the resources to carry out what we have set out to do to take us to the next level of developmment." Speaking on Cote D'Ivoire, he said: "Our problem is that of bringing the leadership together as well as trying to disarm fighters on both sides.
