Task force closes four drug shops in Enugu
From Lawrence Njoku, Enugu

ENUGU State Task Force on Fake and Counterfeit Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Food at the weekend closed four pharmaceutical shops in the state capital over alleged absence of superintendent pharmacists and sale of sub-standard drugs.

The task force, which was on routine inspection of pharmaceutical shops in parts of Enugu Urban, also impounded some drugs which sources were said to be questionable.

Addressing reporters after the closure, the leader of the team, Mr. Clifford Chime, said pharmacists running pharmacy shops must always be present in their shops while they are open. He added that their pharmacies should remain closed when they are not there.

He gave the names of the affected pharmaceutical shops as: Golden Rule Pharmacy Store, Fast Choice Pharmacy Store, Herby Medical and Cosmetics and Multi-Choice Pharmacy.

Promising that all unregistered pharmaceutical products must be flushed out in the health system, he reiterated that the patent medicine shops must restrict themselves to the list of drugs approved for them to safeguard their consumers' health.

Chime advised all pharmaceutical shops and patent medicine dealers in the state to operate within the laws establishing them, adding that the task force would not hesitate to close erring shops.

The Task Force on Fake and Counterfeit Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods has the Police, Ministry of Justice, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFOAC), Ministry of Health, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) as members.
