Delta to evacuate military pensioners from Abuja
From Sunny Ogefere, Asaba
MILITARY pensioners of Delta State origin who have been stranded in Abuja since 2002 got a relief at the weekend as the state government released N1.9 million for their evacuation.
Besides, each of the about 123 pensioners are to receive N10,000 while they would be evacuated back to the state by the government.
In a message to the pensioners who were squatting at the Old Parade Ground, Abuja, the state Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr. Austin Ayemidejor, said the measures have become necessary given the plight of the ex-soldiers.
According to him, the state government sympathised with the pensioners, adding that it was the administration's desire that they be reunited with their families at home.
The commissioner, who was represented by the Director of the State Emergency Relief Agency (SERA), Mr. Sylvester Okoh, disclosed that arrangements have been made to convey them back to Asaba, the state capital, from where they would be assisted with N10,000 each for transportation to their respective homes.
He advised them to return home to their families and wait for further directives from their relevant pensions authorities since they were not receiving attention in Abuja.
Responding, the military pensioners thanked the state government for coming to their rescue, describing it as a welcome relief.
The pensioners said they had suffered untold hardship since 2002 and that at a time, authorities in Abuja accused them of constituting a nuisance in the Federal Capital City.
However, the ex-soldiers argued that they had no option than to stay back in Abuja to enable them get their statutory benefits.
Besides, they requested for a shift in the date of the evacuation as they were undergoing some processes necessary for the payment of their entitlements.
