Etiebet, Adebanjo call for probe
By Fred Okoror,Political Correspondent

AS the nation mourns the sudden death of Chief Debo Akande (SAN), the National Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Chief Don Etiebet and Afenifere's Deputy leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo have called for a probe into the sad incident.

Speaking in an interview with The Guardian, Etiebet said the death of Akande was too sudden, stressing that his demise was capable of creating fears in the minds of politicians.

He added that such incident could paint Nigeria's political landscape as unsafe in the eyes of foreigners

Said Etiebet: "The news of Akande's death came to us as a rude shock. For a man that had been hearty to drop dead suddenly, leaves a lot to be desired. This is a man that was not known to be ill. How could he have died suddenly in a foreign land

  • "

The ANPP chairman called for investigation into the death, lamenting that it was very sad for a man of high intellect and a seasoned legal practitioner to die under such controversial circumstance.

Adebanjo queried Akande's sudden death few days after he announced his withdrawal from the trial of the remaining suspects in Ige's murder case.

He described Akande as a very brilliant lawyer who handled his brief with candour and decorum.

In his reaction, the National Publicity Secretary of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Venatius Ikem, said the leadership of the party was most pained when it learnt of Akande's death in London.

Ikem said it was regrettable that he died when budding lawyers needed to tap from his immense experience in the legal profession.

He said that the professional manner he discharged his duties in the celebrated case of Senator Iyiola Omisore murder trial won the deceased lawyer the admiration of many Nigerians.

He advised Nigerians to desist from reading or insinuating meanings into his death, saying any wrong conclusion and insinuation into his demise could be misleading.

Said Ikem: "It is most unfortunate that Akande died suddenly. He was a very experienced and seasoned lawyer. Most young lawyers would have benefited from him immensely if he had lived a little longer.

"In deed, the news came to us as a rude shock. We enjoin Nigerians to resist the temptation of reading meanings into the death because it would be too hasty to do so without proper investigation. Besides, such insinuation could also be misleading to the general."
