5 Delta State Electoral Commissioners disown wards' creation

By Neville Amorighoye
Monday, August 09, 2004

WARRI — FIVE members of the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) have disowned the controversial creation of new electoral wards in the state, and asked for government’s intervention. The five — Captain Cletus Emiemokunmo, Mr. Ikechukwu Oputa, Mr. Jacob Ibudeh, Mr. Otimeyin Adams and Chief Orovwagho Awudu-Ode — in a petition to Governor James Ibori said Chairman of the commission, Justice James Omo-Agege (rtd), did not take them into confidence on the matter.

Their letter of August 3, 2004 reads: “We the under-signed members of the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) wish to seek audience with your excellency to explain to you that the chairman of the commission, Hon. Justice James Omo Agege, did not take us into confidence in the on-going exercise of creation of new electoral wards throughout the state. Indeed, all what the chairman has done so far regarding the creation of electoral wards, he did solo.

“Your Excellency, section 12 sub-section 2 of the commission’s enabling law provides: “A member of the commission shall be entitled to one vote and a decision of the meeting may be taken and any act or thing may be done in the name of the commission by a majority of the members present at the meeting.

“In spite of all our entreaties and appeals to the chairman to summon a formal meeting to discuss all issues relating to creation of new electoral wards, he has refused to budge.

“We are, therefore, by this letter requesting Your Excellency to graciously intervene in the matter by urgently granting us the audience we seek with you.”
