LAGOS—NIGERIA Labour Congress (NLC) has warned the Federal Government to be cautious of the way it is going about the concept of globalisation before it plunges the country into economic disaster, stressing the need for a phased and gradual adoption of the globalisation programme.
Speaking on the “Impact of Globalisation on Nigerian Labour” at the second Aret Adams memorial lecture weekend in Lagos, President of NLC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole explained that the fundamental objective of globalisation which is about liberalization of international capital flows, and trans-border transactions in goods and services, will only benefit the advanced economies and dip deep into poverty developing countries.
Comrade Adams Oshiomhole who was represented by the Director, Labour Centre For Social and Economic Research, (LACSER), Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson at the Aret Adams Memorial Lecture in Lagos, pointed out reasons why Nigeria should soft-pedal in the way it embraces globalisation.
According to NLC, the global competition which is part of globalisation leads to winner-takes-all situation. Therefore, those countries that come out top win big while the loser countries lose even bigger. The globalisation concept, it said, has widened the already existing inequalities among nations of the world.
The labour congress said that the level of unemployment is increasing in Nigeria due to global competition. It noted that loss of over 350,000 jobs have been recorded due to massive closures of textile factories in Nigeria, and domestic manufactures are shrinking due to low levels of capacity utilization. Existing companies are increasingly outsourcing most of their functions and also resorting to use of casual workers. Higher profits among companies currently do no longer mean increased better wages and job security for employees, it added. These disadvantages recorded in developing countries, are advantages to the developed economies, the union said.
