Robbers storm police station, kill corporal

    TONY ITA ETIM, Port Harcourt

GUNMEN believed to be armed robbers last Friday, in commando style, stormed the divisional police headquarters, Abonema, Degema local government of Rivers State, killing a corporal in the process.

The corporal was shot dead when the gunmen, on arrival at the headquarters in the early hours of the morning, promptly opened fire indiscriminately to scare away the policemen there.

State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sylvester Araba, who confirmed the attack, said a corporal who was on guard duty was killed in the attack.

Araba said the robbers may have invaded the station based on suspicion that a large sum of money meant for the payment of salaries to staff of Degema local government was kept in the station.

Mr. Araba, said some "Ghana Must Go" bags were taken into the station and because payment of council staff salaries was routinely going on at the period, people assumed the bags contained money.

Though no arrests had been made, Araba said some council staff have been invited for questioning.

He said though those invited for questioning are not the suspects, men from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) are interrogating them for possible clues.

Degema had been home to some of the dreaded militia groups in Rivers State as indigenes of some of the communities in the area have fled their homes for months now.

Communities like Tombia, Bakana and Abonema have been largely deserted by residents as militia groups reign there, though the situation is changing due to the presence of a joint military and police patrol.
