Proceedings resume Aug. 12
JAYNE OSONDU, Umuahia
FURTHER
proceedings at the judicial panel investigating impeachment allegation against
Abia State Deputy Governor, Dr. Chima Nwafor, resume on August 12, even as
chairman of the panel, Mr. Emma Nwonye, has hailed media coverage of the event
as objective.
Speaking while adjourning sitting to
August 12, Mr. Nwoye extolled the quality of journalism and the objective
position of media practitioners covering the panel’s public sitting as highly
commedable.
He said the way journalists reported the
proceedings so far left the panel concluding that Nigerian reporters are people
of high integrity.
According to him, "from day one of the
public sitting, no report in any newspaper has misrepresented what was said in
evidence."
"I am proud that the Fourth Estate of the
Realm is made up of such men and women," he said.
Mr. Nwonye also praised lawyers on both
sides to the case for the mature way they presented their clients’ cases
pointing out that it made the panel members work easier.
Earlier, during the days sitting the panel
had turned down an application of the prosecution counsel, Mr. Don Oweregbulam.
Mr. Oweregbulam had requested that the
Director of Protocol (DOP) at Government House, Umuahia be summoned to clarify
certain issues brought up while he was cross examining Dr. Nwafor.
This sparked off heated legal argument
between both prosecution and defence counsel, Elder Chibuike Nwokeukwu.
Elder Nwokeukwu objected to the
application on the ground that the prosecution had closed its case and,
therefore, that it is not proper in law to reopen the case.
He said that the prosecution had enough
time while presenting its case, to invite any witness it deemed fit to help it
prove its contention.
He said even though the panel had bent
certain legal rules as it is not a conventional court, there are things that are
not proper, fair and just.
Chairman of the panel, Mr. Nwonye, had to
adjourn for a while at this point to enable members decide on the application.
When the panel reconvened later in the
day, Mr. Nwonye announced that the panel had to reject the application not only
for the fact that prosecution had closed its case, but also that without
summoning the director, prosecution had been able to present its case
convincingly.
