The multi-million naira
Ajaokuta Steel Com
pany was yesterday engulf in crisis as workers of the company demanded the immediate termination of contract between the federal government and SOLGAS Energy Ltd.
Already, a detachment of military and mobile police personnel have been drafted to forestall any damage to the gigantic steel company arising from the on-going crisis.
The workers, numbering over 4000 demanded the cancellation of the contract on the ground that barely eleven months after the taking over of the steel company by Solgas Energy Limited, no positive changes have taken place in the plant.
Solgas Energy, they noted, was only deceiving Nigerians about the assumed progress made in the company as it has never invested one naira on the project and accused the company of selling off assets of the plant.
Responding to the dem-and of the aggrieved wor-kers, the chairman of the Iron and Steel Senior Staff Ass-ociation of Nigeria (ISSSAN), Comrade Orimiyupa O. Titus, assured the workers of the steel plant that their demand would be met through civilised means.
The union, he explained, had protested when the federal government initially entered the agreement with Solgas on the ground of its low capital base of 16 million dollars and the fact that the company has never managed any steel company before now but the federal gover-nment turned deaf ear to their protest.
The only option left for the federal government, he advised, was to terminate the contract and call back the Russians who initially started the company.
Meanwhile, the industrial strike ordered by the union to force compliance with the workers demand would commence today.
The strike, according to the workers, would only be called off when the federal government yield to their demand.
Solgas Energy vice-chairman, Mr. Seun Oyefaso and top management staff of the company have been evacuated to an unknown destination following the tension that has engulfed the company.
