FG Approves N2bn Welfare for Customs
By Francis Ugwoke

The Federal Government has approved the sum of N2 billion as welfare package for the officers and men of the Nigeria Customs Service.

A source close to the Service said that the amount was a government grants to encourage the personnel of the Customs in their job of revenue collection in the country.

The amount, our source added, was given to the Service in appreciation of the organisation's ability to exceed revenue target.

Government had last year given the Service a revenue target of N200 billion, which it exceeded by over N20 billion.

Customs Public Relations Officer, Mr. Wale Adeniyi who confirmed the story, however, said that he was not aware of how much was exactly approved by the government.

Adeniyi disclosed that very soon the managment of the Customs will release guidelines on how the money will be shared.

But our source diclosed that the management team of the Customs is divided on how to share the amount.

It was gathered that while some want part of the money to be set aside for staff welfare projects, others are insisting that all the money should be shared among officers and men.

However, Adeniyi who denied such disagreement explained that the management was only waiting for necessary appoval concerning the money.

The former management of the Service had on receiving such package from the government set part of it aside for welfare projects.

But the argument by some staff is that the organisation does not have to depend on such small amount of fund from the government to carry out welare programme for personnel.

Officers and men of customs have often lamented poor condition of service despite the huge revenue the Service generates for the government each year.
