Police-Army Clash: D/Gov Appeals for Calm
From Omon-Julius Onabu in Benin-City

Edo State Deputy Governor, Chief Mike Oghiaodmhe, has appealed for calm following the violent confrontation between some police and army personnel in the Benin-City, saying the state remained peace-loving. He observed that the clash was uncalled for because the spontaneous issue that led to the clash was too insignificant.

Oghidomhe's comment was coming at the heels of an observation by the state police authorities that the incident emanated from "a minor misunderstanding" between a handful of policemen and soldiers.

A soldier attached to the P &T; unit of the Nigerian Army, Benin-City, reportedly attempted to intervene when the driver of a commercial bus was arrested by a traffic warden for undiclosed traffic offence leading to the violent clash.

The policemen were said to have rebuffed the soldier's entreaty probably because he was dressed in mufti and was allegedly given a lash in the head from a policeman's belt, but other soldiers eventually mobilised in a counter-attack and sporadic shooting ensued.

A young lady, who was suspected to be a student in one of the institutions in the state, but whose real identity could not yet be ascertained, was burnt to death inside a commercial bus at the busy Ring road following the confusion that greeeted the clash.

An eye-witness account said the deceased may have been hit by a stray bullet at the time a bullet allegedly hit the mini-bus and set it on fire, burning down the vehicle and the lady beyond recognition.

A reconciliatory committee made up of two soldiers and two policemen is expected to submit a report on the matter today.
