Govt, NMA Disagree on Strike
From Tunde Sanni in Ilorin
Kwara State government and the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in the state have openly disagreed on its strike action, suspended last month in deference to the intervention of Governor Bukola Saraki.
But the doctors, rising from its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Ilorin promised that the strike scheduled to start today may be shelved if the state meets their demands, which they guaranteed have been approved.
In the communiqu issued at the end of the AGM, the doctors indicted some officials of the state for prolonging the crisis to discredit the good intention of the governor.
Apparently pushed to the wall, the communiqu said that the consensus is for all doctors in the employ of the government to resume the suspended strike from August 9. "The strike will be indefinite.
If all the grieviances have not been resolved to the satisfaction of the association by the expiration of the nine-day notice. The decision making body of the NMA has directed that all doctors in the service of the government should resume the suspended strike action from 8 am on Monday August 9.
The communiqu commended the effort of the state at resolving all labour related crisis promptly noting that the amount required to meet their demands which is slightly over N2 million monthly as contained in the 2004 budget has been approved by the house of assembly."
"The issue of harmonisation of salary grade for all doctors in the state service to appropriate grades as contained in the scheme of services of the civil service of the federation is an important issue not yet addressed."
In a swift reaction to the strike notice, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Hajia Ayinke Saka described the communiqu as belated "as we have held another round of meeting with the NMA officials and we have both resolved that there would not be any strike again."
The convener of the parley, Alhaji Yusuf Daibu who is also the Head of Service (HOS) in the state pleaded "with the doctors to give us time for the implementation of their demands."
He confirmed that the government has met with the doctors where the state position was tabled.
