Enugu, Warri, Ogbomosho Join Glo Network
Nigeria's second national carrier, Glo Mobile has extended its mobile network coverage to Enugu, Warri, Ogbomosho and the Ilorin-Ogbomosho Road.
The new cities pushes to 68, the number of cities and towns on the Glo network, just eleven months after its roll out.
Reports said the first privately owned Nigerian network is deploying 37 base stations in Enugu, the political capital of South East and the capital of Enugu State. Glo officials said this was done to ensure that subscribers on the network will enjoy quality service wherever they are in the sprawling city.
Also coming soon is Warri-Ughelli road, Ughelli town, Warri-Sapele Road, Warri-Abraka Road, Abraka and Benin-Sapele Road. They will be joined by Kano, Zaria, Jaji, Kaduna, Jos, Bauchi and Abuja-Kano Road.
These cities are joining 65 other towns and cities and nine major highways which are already on the Glo network.
Prominent among the towns are Lagos, Abuja, Ibadan, Nnewi, Port Harcourt, Aba, Ilorin, Onitsha, Calabar, Benin, Ijebu-Ode, Sagamu, Minna, Suleja, Epe, Badagry, Eket, Asaba, Abagana, Awka, Ihiala and Sango Ota.
Also on the network are Abeokuta, Ilesa, Ile-Ife, Seme, Ichi, Oraifite, Ojoto, Ozubulu, Nnobi, Aiyetoro, Aiyedun, Nkpor, Ijebu-Ife, Ijebu-Mushin, Erun-won, Ota, Ago-Iwoye, Bonny Island, Uromi, Ekpoma, Ishara Remo, Ode Remo, Onne, Ibeju-Lekki, Ibafo, Ogere, Ore, Mowe and Idiroko among others.
Although Glo Mobile launched its operation about two years after the others had rolled out, it enjoys the privilege of being the only network in the country to have covered the Lagos-Benin Expressway. This made it possible for the network to cover such towns and communities like Ikenne, Ososa, Ilishan, Idowa, Tibori Town, Ogbere, Alokolodo and Orogun, Abigi, Ajemabile, Itele, Araromi Obu, Oniparaga, Ese Odo, Oloruntedo and Imoran. Also covered are Oke-Ola town, Ilu Tuntun, Asejire, Onile Ere, Ofosu, Ohusu, Evbonogbon, Mile 18, Ofue Wegbe, Ogua, Ekiadolor and Ovibiloge.
Already, Glo Mobile has earned the reputation of the fastest growing network in Africa with its officials assuring Nigerians that "if we are not yet in your community, we are almost there".
The network which said it is building the biggest and the best network in Africa, has also reached an advanced stage in installing its nationwide backbone. The first phase includes the laying of 2,800 km fibre optics from Lagos to Benin, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Abuja, Minna, Ilorin, Ibadan back to Lagos.
The network will also link Abuja with Kaduna, Zaria and Kano through a powerful digital backbone while Bauchi, Jos, Yola and other parts of the north will be linked through microwave. It has also built switches in major towns like Lagos, Ibadan, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Jos and Bauchi to carry the traffic.
Glo Mobile had earlier announced its plan to increase its line capacity to four million by the end of the year and 10 million by the end of next year. It reached the one million subscriber mark in just 10 months of operation.
No fewer than 20 northern cities will be covered by Globacom from September as it intensified its efforts to cover the whole country while other parts of the South such as Osogbo, Akure and Ondo are also on queue to join the network. Two world class GSM vendors, Alcatel and Siemens are handling the deployment of Globacom infrastructure around the country.
Globacom became an instant hit with Nigerians mainly because of a series of innovations it introduced.
Such include the per second billing system which Globacom pioneered, the Pre-paid Premium which offers as low as N19 per minute for calls, the Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) which allows subscribers to send advanced text messages including picture and sound, the Magic Plus which offers subscribers refreshing information, communication and entertainment content, the text to e-mail service and the Friends and Family offer.
One of the most profound innovations so far introduced by Globacom was the Talk Now package which enables Nigerian mobile subscribers to get connected with as low as N2,999 while the balance is paid in instalments.
