Non-Settlement of Claims, Bane of Insurance Firms - Daniel Ogun From Toba Suleiman in Abeokuta Governor Gbenga Daniel of Ogun State has said many people lost confidence in the insurance companies because of impediments encountered in an attempt to claim their indemnities. Daniel gave the explanation while receiving members of the Institute of Loss Adjusters led by its National President, Mr. Sammy Sotomi. The Governor further identified non-settlement of claims to clients as the bane of the insurance companies in the country. According to him, while insurance companies in the advanced countries always responded promptly to emergency situations, many of such companies in Nigeria always look for excuses, thus denying clients their claims. "Instead of serving as the hope of their clients during disaster period, most of these companies always look for excuses or technical reasons to deny people of their legitimate claims", the Governor said. Describing the development as very unpleasant, Daniel urged the institute to divise a monitoring strategy to nip it in the bud to restore public confidence. Speaking earlier, Sotomi described the institute as one of the four pillars upon which the nation's insurance body rested. According to him, the institute was in business to ensure that the insuring public and the players in the industry were treated fairly when claims arose. He however, appealed to the state Government to provide land for the establishment of the institute's office to enhance their business.
