'Why Nigeria Loses in World-Class Businesses' Rivers FromOkon Bassey in Port Harcourt A Port Harcourt based Business Consultant has identified absence of modern, scientific approach to business as what had robbed Nigerians of its due share of world-class businesses. The Chairman, Native Development Consultants (NDC), Ltd, Dr. Chinedu Jideofo Ogbuagu, made this remarks while delivering a lecture on the "role of business development oragnisations in a developing economy" at the 2004 Leadership/Excellence Award held by the Junior Chmaber International Nigeria, Port Harcourt Metropolitant Chapter. Ogbuagu, who was guest speaker at the occasion, observed that before now Nigerians had depended on traditional business apprenticeship/training arrangements; recommending that all graduates should be given self-employment training, as part of their National Youth Service Corps(NYSC) to facilitate business development in the country. " Businesses are the engine of development of any economy; any real value added to a society can only be by businesses. Therefore, without a well developed business sector, the economy will remain in the slow lane" The business consultant argued that develoing economies, like Nigeria must realised that, without large numbers of quality and strong businesses, they will remain in the slow lane in the development process. According to him, business development organisations should be engaged more constructively and purposefully by the government to help to increase the standard, numbers, size and varieties of businesses operating in the economy.
