Amember of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and one of the fonuders of Obasanjo Solidarity Forum (OSF), Alhaji Lekan Yussuf has warned that people would not hesitate to mobilize political leaders to prevail on President Olusegun Obasanjo to stay beyond 2007, if the issue of zoning is not resolved between the North and Southern part of the country.
In a press statement, Yussuf said, "the North is bent on taking over the rulership of the country in year 2007,political leaders in the South-eastern part of the country are also insisting that it is their turn, if there is no compromise among the two zones people would compel President Obasanjo to remain in office come 2007."
He added that, some state governors and individuals from the North, have declared emphatically that a Northern President in 2007 is not negotiable and the South-eastern Governors Forum stood its ground that they must produce a President for Nigeria after president Obasanjo, it shows that the issue is becoming a do-or-die affair.
He noted that, it is dangerous for those involved in the race to go about in a manner that would bring bad blood, hatred and instability for the nation, when Obasanjo is barely a year old in office.
He said "exchange of hot words over 2007 Presidency when Obasanjo is barely a year old in his second term is an unnecessary diversion capable of disturbing the present administration from executing more policies and programmes that could minimize the sufferings facing the masses of the nation".
He advised politicians and national leaders involved in the race to put the interest of the country above personal interests, adding that they should all behave in a manner that would make the transition from President Obasanjo in 2007 be a peaceful, acceptable and a very smooth one.
Yussuf however said, "if the issue of year 2007 Presidency will tear the country apart, the people should prevail on President Obasanjo to hold on to avoid disunity that can discredit our country in the eyes of the world".
