NICON Football: ABU, UNIPORT Cruise into Semis By Femi Solaja As the annual NICON Insurance football league among Universities enters the home stretch, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) and University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) have qualified for the semi final of the competition. The two institutions achieved this feat after a brilliant display in the second round of the league, which was rounded up over the weekend at the University of Benin mini stadium, Edo State. The acada lads from Port Harcourt edged out Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife in the final qualifying match by a lone goal scored by Olasheide Adewale in the dying minutes of the crucial match to pick the group ticket for the semi final. Earlier, UNIPORT and Ladoke Akintola University, Ogbomosho played 1-1 while OAU overwhelmed the Ogbomosho side 3-0 and thus needed a draw to reach the semi final berth but lost the final match to a more determined Port Harcourt side. While in-group B, ABU towered ahead of Olabisi Onabanjo University Ago-Iwoye (OOU) and Enugu State University and Technology, Enugu (ESUT). OOU and ABU had played goalless in the opening group match while ESUT secured a lone goal win over Ago- Iwoye side but lost the group decider to ABU by a lone goal scored toward the end of the match. The semi final matches would be played at University of Lagos Sports Centre, Akoka with University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) against UNIPORT in the first match while University of Jos tackles ABU in the second semi final and both matches comes up on Friday. Out of the 39 Institutions that registered for the competition only three - University of Benin, University of Abuja and University of Calabar did not participate.
