Plateau Dominate Kaduna MTN Marathon
From Duro Ikhazuagbe in Kaduna
Plateau State athletes yesterday in Kaduna demonstrated their supremacy in the zonal marathon meet ahead of the half international meet scheduled later in the year for Lagos.
Though, in the male category, the winner of the 2003 National Sports Festival in the 5,000m and 10,000m events, Wilson Eku of Bauchi State won the event in the midst of seven other Plateau State athletes in a timing that became controversial.
Among the strong field of competitors include the Nigerian in the top bracket of the first MTN Half International Marathon in Lagos, Umaru Mohammed. Eku powered home to the top spot.
While independent timing gave him the race in 1.07:39, the official timing was 1.14:39. However, the controversy did not diminish anything from him as the winner and top qualifier for the Lagos meet.
The event, which was attended by many of the expatriate workers of the American Embassy in Abuja, saw the Plateau athletes' stream one after the other to pick the planned sponsorship of the MTN for the half marathon in Lagos.
Danjuma Gyang, Issa Kiloban, Danjuma Monday, Steven Jurge, Emmanuel Pam, and Marcus Simon finished the race in that order respectively with Shoneni Yinusa of Kogi State picking the 8th position for the MTN sponsorship in Lagos scheduled for 20th November.
The two female qualifiers: Ladi Musa and Janet Dung are also Plateau runners. Miss Musa, it would be recalled dominated the 5,000m and 10,000m in the country at the last three National Sports Festivals in Bauchi, Edo and Abuja respectively.
She has the unique feature of running without shoes, which she attributed to a situation where she wants to avoid any form of weight encumbrances.
Also, a 12-year old runner, Umaru Bamanga Nuhu finished in the top 20 position. For his effort, the organisers rewarded the Essence International School, Kaduna student with N2, 000, MTN SIM Pack and several other gifts.
Ahmadu Bello Stadium grounds staffer; Mr. Joshua Charles won a brand new Gizene motorcycle in the raffle draw conducted after the race. Several others won many gifts. Meanwhile, the organisation of the Kaduna race was an improvement over what was witnessed in the Enugu zonal meet.
