NB Chess: Atimomo Tasks NCF
By Femi Solaja

With less than 48 hours to the Nigerian Breweries International Open Chess Championship, the Public Relations Manager of NB Plc, Mrs Mimi Atimomo, has tasked organisers of the competition, Nigeria Chess Federation (NCF) to ensure a hitch free tournament.

Mrs Atimomo, who represented Mr Larry Agose the Public Relations Adviser at the press briefing last week for the 29th edition of the competition, said that NCF should take with more seriousness the recommendations of the Chief Arbiter who complained of some lapses at the last edition held last year.

According to her: "As sponsors, we note and take very seriously, the recommendations made by the Chief Arbiter in his report on the 28th edition held last December. I would like to encourage the Chief officers of the NCF, particularly the Secretary General, to take these recommendations on board for a smooth and hitch-free tournament," she advised.

Last year's champion Adebayo Adegboyega and Internatinal Master Odion Aikhoje are highly favoured to win the N140, 000 prize money in the FIDE section, which is the highest sum at any chess event in the country.

Other contenders for the star prize are Bunmi Olape, Williams Abiye, Christopher Tobeioye, Chikwere Onyikwere and Afolabi Akintola.

Prizes will also be won in all the other seven categories namely Opens 1 and 2, Ladies section, U-14 boys and girls and the newly created Veteran Category.

About N800, 000 will be won in all the categories while about N3 million will be invested by the sponsor in the four-day championship which run from Wednesday to Sunday at the New Gymnasium of the National Stadium, Lagos.

All the affiliated chess clubs, state chess associations and the Federal Capital territory are expected to participate in the competition.
