Like
a huge pall, the pangs of death enveloped the 7 Alawade Street Ikate,
Surulere, Lagos residence of Debo Akande, Senior Advocate of Nigeria
(SAN), on Sunday after news of his demise in London broke earlier in the day. He was
aged 66.
Activities
around the modest one storey home bore the sign of the sad event as some
of the relatives wept and others wore long faces when sympathisers
thronged the house to pay their respects. Long queues of cars stretched
through the street and adjourning areas.
Almost
immediately after the announcement, messages began pouring in thick and
fast to commiserate with the family of the accomplished lawyer. Among the
sympathisers were Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu, former Governor of
old Oyo State Victor Olunloyo and former federal Attorney General Richard
Akinjide.
Tinubu said: “I
received with profound sadness the news of the death in London last night
of the frontline legal practitioner, statesman and political activist,
Chief Debo Akande. His demise at this time is most shocking and
unexpected. He has left us at a time when more than ever before, this
country needs men of his kind with an unblemished record of character,
courage and integrity”.
In his tribute,
Olunloyo said in Ibadan that Akande’s death will create a big vacuum in
the legal profession. “His death to us is a very shocking one and this is
least expected as he has just returned from a vacation abroad”.
Akande was the
leading prosecution counsel in the celebrated trial of those accused of
the murder of former federal Attorney General Bola Ige before he declined
to continue with the case.
Paying his regards,
Akinjide said his demise is a “great disaster” for the legal profession.
Former National Vice Chairman of the
Alliance for Democracy (AD) Ayo Fasanmi described it as “the greatest
tragedy”.
