NNPC plans two new companies By Chuks Isiwu, Energy Editor, Lagos   To prepare itself for the task of meeting the challenges of the new role gas is expected to play in the nation’s economic calculations, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) is planning to create two new companies from one of its existing subsidiaries, the Nigerian Gas Company (NGC). The establishment of the companies, to be known as the Nigerian Gas Transmission Company (NGTC) and the Nigerian Gas Marketing Company (NGMC), is coming at a time the nation is preparing to launch itself as a major force in global gas supply, a move that would see the country emerge the world’s fourth largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) producer in the next three years. The two companies are specifically considered an important part of this calculation as industry sources maintained that their roles would have direct bearing on the activities of all companies involved in the downstream gas business in the country. Confirming the move to establish the two companies at the weekend in Abuja, the NNPC Group Managing Director, Funso Kupolokun, disclosed that the NGMC would be charged with selling harnessed gas to companies involved either in the export business or those distributing in the local market while the NGTC would transmit the gas in pipelines to the point nearest the purchasing companies.       Copyright� 2002.
