Activists arrest: NLC writes NASS, demands apology from SSS

By Don Bassey

Correspondent, Abuja

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has described as an affront to democracy the arrest penultimate Thursday of its Parliamentary Liaison Officer, Mr. Benson Upah and another of its staff, Mr. Moses Umaru, on the premises of the National Assembly.

The Congress said allowing the Department of State Security (DSS) to arrest any Nigerian inside the National Assembly, which is supposed to be “a safe and secure place, free from blackmail or intimidation of any sort; a bastion of democracy where all shades of opinion are freely and peacefully expressed” amounted to “a subversion of people’s cherished expectations and democratic values”

NLC has therefore demanded an unconditional apology to it for the “indignity, humiliation, trauma, loss and deprivations” suffered by its members. The department is also to apologise to the National Assembly for desecrating the “hallowed grounds” of the legislative body when it carried out the arrests on its premises.

Excerpts of the letter signed by NLC’s Acting General Secretary, Owei Lakemfa, and addressed to Senate President, Adolphus Wabara, reads: “On behalf of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the NLC, I write to formally inform as well as protest to the distinguished Senate the illegal and unjustifiable arrest and detention of our Parliamentary Liaison Officer to the National Assembly, Mr. Benson Upah, and another staff, Mr. Moses Umaru, by officers and men of the Department of State Security (DSS) on Thursday July 29, 2004.
