Cricket: Nigeria flops in Lusaka

By Taiwo Alimi

Senior Correspondent, Lagos

Nigeria’s cricket team at the ongoing World Cup Qualifying Series in Lusaka Zambia is still languishing at the bottom of the table after three matches.

So far the Olisa Egwuatu tutored side has played three matches and lost all.

After the third round of fixtures, only the favourites Namibia and Uganda are still unbeaten with Nigeria succumbing to their superior fire.

Nigeria got its baptism of fire against Namibia at the Lusaka South Cricket Ground last week. Batting first the Nigerian side scored 30 runs all out in 19.5 seconds while Namibia easily overran them in 6 0ver scoring 33 runs. It was one match the Nigerian side never got into well and it was  over in a matter of minutes.

Uganda playing on another ground same day, Lotus Cricket Ground defeated Tanzania after scoring 71 runs in 20 overs over Tanzania’s 70 runs all out in 39 overs. Nigeria’s second match was against the hosts and they almost turned the table against Zambia as they batted first and scored 96 all out in 38.2 overs. Zambia was soon in trouble with the score at 19 for 3 but recovered for a while. At one stage they were struggling on 47 for 6 until Greg Gelenhuysad and Tishi Ibrahim came to their rescue to win with two wickets.

Namibia had a very comfortable win against Tanzania in the second match. They batted first and were all out for 97 in 45 overs to win by 7 wickets.
