Nigeria’s
top tennis player,U.S based Jonathan Igbinovia who is in the country for
the ITF Men’s futures which started a wek ago has said that his non
appearance at the Athens Olympics was a major set back for him.
He
said he had been looking forward to an outing that would prove to the
world that he was good when the news that Nigeria had not met the
requirements reached him.
According
to him, “I was greatly frustrated when the news reached me.I was hoping that I would go there and
shine but unfortunately,I did not have the chance”.
Also,
Toyin Dairo expressed the same feeling saying that he knew in advance
that the team would not make much impact but that he only wanted to go to
the Olympics to increase his points and boost his ITF ranking. “we were
not saying that we would win medals but only going there to expose
ourselves and win points so as to improve on our rankings.I feel so sad
that it did not materialize”he said.
In
the opinion of Abdulmumuni Babalola, the country’s absence at the Olympics
was bad but he felt that it was one disappointment he had to bear as a
man. “everything happens for good. You have to be a man especially when
things don’t go the way you want them to go.I have pushed it behind me
and looking forward to the next Olympics.
Meanwhile,
Jonathan Igbinovia has said that his stay in the U.S. had helped to
improve his game a lot. According to the tennis player, “my stay in the
U.S. has helped to improve my performance a lot because you play with top
players and there is always
one event or the other every week.
What
it means is that you keep playing and you keep meeting top players who
are much better and this helps to improve your game. You can’t compare it
with staying in Nigeria at all.”He also said he was aspiring to be a
world class champion saying that he had what it takes to be a champion.
Igbinovia
is ranked 600th in the world by the ITF.
