CBN Tourney kicks off

After weeks of delay, the  26th edition of the CBN Senior Tennis  Open Tournament will kick off on the 12th of August, 2004 at the National Staduim, Surulere Lagos.The finals will be played on the 21st of August

The tournament which was supposed to have taken place in June had been delayed because of the changes in the top level management of the CBN.

In a press briefing to flag off the tournament, the CBN’S director of human resources, said the tournament was today marked amongst the most exciting sporting competitions in  the country which was in realization of the bank’s desire to contribute to the development of the game of tennis and sporting activities in the country disclosing that this year’s prize money had been increased to N2.395 from  N1. 727. m saying that he hoped that the increase would help to raise the level of tennis in the country  to match other international competitions  such as Wimbledon and the French Opens.

In his address, the president of the Nigerian Tennis Federation,Sanni Ndanusa who was represented by the Vice president of the federation Wing Commander Iweze (rtd)  recalled that last year’s champion, Sunday Maku led the Nigerian team to the country’s All Africa Games outing  winning three gold medals,one silver and one bronze  out of the six gold medals at stake.

He also  said  that the tournament was an event for grooming talents for the country.
