The embattled
workers of Slok Air Nigeria Limited at the International Airport, Port
Harcourt, has sent a Save Our Soul (SOS) message to the Rivers State
government, as well as the state House of Assembly to pressurise the
Federal Government to lift the suspension on the airline. In the letter
dated July 27, this year, the affected workers, who are mostly Rivers
State indigenes, appealed to the state government to intervene, as there
was evidence to prove that they would likely be thrown into the labour
market.
Signed by Mr. Mark Dappa, the
station manager, Reginald Jaja, Constance Okoye, Yemi Akinseye and Gogo Bupo,
among others, the workers
said their pathetic and miserable situation should spur the state
government to come to their aid by pressuring the Federal Government to
lift the suspension.
According to them “since March 12, 2004, when the
minister of aviation announced the suspension of the Air Operating
Licence of Slok Air, which we all work under, life has been very
difficult and miserable with salaries not paid.
“We know that the management
of Slok Air has done everything possible to meet the standards set for
its licence to be restored by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority
(NCAA), but nothing has happened. Now, we are faced with a situation in
which the management recently decided to lay off all staff of the
airline.”
They explained that since they
are Rivers State indigenes and have nowhere else to go, they want the
governor, as well as the
Assembly members, to use their good offices to intervene in the matter
and enjoined those responsible for restoring Slok Air operational licence
to do so, so that they do not lose their jobs by the end of the month.
The workers said that they
know the governor to be a very compassionate person; hence he should do
everything in his power to save them the fear and fate of being thrown
into the job market.
